Steam Cleaner vs. Carpet Cleaner vs. Steam Mop
Steam cleaners, carpet cleaners, and steam mops are all great pieces of kit that make the lengthy and boring task of keeping a home clean and shiny a lot easier. In many cases, these are pitted against each other with customers looking for the best option.
However, the fact of the matter is, that all of these products have benefits and their best uses are actually pretty different. What you need the product for, will ultimately determine which one will be the best choice for you. Let’s take a closer look.
Steam cleaning in reference to cleaning carpets, is not actually as reliant on steam as the name may suggest. In the context of carpet cleaning, steam cleaning actually refers to a process called hot water extraction. This cleaning method works by using equipment that is able to spray hot water combined with cleaning chemicals on to the carpet whilst also vacuuming up the sprayed water and any stubborn particles that it has managed to dislodge.
If actual direct steam is used on the carpet the fibers could shrink and the carpet would be damaged. Therefore purchasing a good steam cleaner purely to clean your carpet may not be the best plan. However, steam cleaners have many other uses that make them an impressive investment.
Cleaning Your Oven
No matter how careful you are it’s inevitable that your oven will suffer some casualties, and when you finally get up the courage to take a closer look you’ll be faced with layers of baked on grease and spilled food. This is where a steam cleaner can be a godsend. Using the steamer with a brush tool attached will quickly and easily remove all of that horrible built up grease.
Most steam cleaners are handheld or at least come with a handheld feature, and this makes them the perfect tool to clean upholstery. Many cleaners will even come with an upholstery attachment. Using the attachment, apply the steam to the upholstered surface and keep the cleaner moving to make sure the material doesn’t get too wet. This process will lift any stains and will also smooth out creases and get rid of dust mites.
The best cleaner for carpets is definitely a purpose built dedicated carpet cleaner. The reason for this is that these kind of cleaners are able to draw out the stubborn and embedded dirt without using high temperatures that could damage the structural integrity of the carpet.
However, some of the best carpet cleaners come in the form of powders. These are great because they are so easy to use. Literally all you need to do is sprinkle powder over the carpet and let it work on the stains for a while. Then you just come back and hoover it up. It’s completely safe, foolproof and mess free.
If you have wooden floors, tiled floors or laminate floors then a steam mop is definitely the best tool for the job. It’s especially effective on tiles because it can remove that horrible dirt from the grout between the tiles and makes it look shiny and new again.
The best thing about a steam mop is that it’s unlikely you will need anything else apart from hot water to clean. If you have a significant mess to clean up you might want to add a general floor cleaner to the water but apart from that, you can just fire it up and go. The steam will lift any grime and dirt stuck to the floor and the mop section will sweep this away leaving a gleaming floor behind.
If you’re looking for a versatile product that can be used for a variety of problems then investing in a steam cleaner is definitely the way to go. Although it’s not advisable to use it on carpets, it is possible to use it on small stubborn stains, as long as you practice moderation.
Steam mops are also a great investment but they are not quite as flexible as a general steam cleaner. However, if you are looking purely for a product to get your carpet looking and smelling brand spanking new, then going for a dedicated carpet cleaner will always be the best choice.
