Bissell Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine Review

Bissell has been in the homecare care business for over 140 years (yes you heard me correctly) that is a hell of a long time when compared to newer vacuum brands such as Dyson and Dirt Devil who have only recently entered the marketplace. So when I say Bissell knows a thing or two about vacuuming you better believe it.

Even though Bissell has been around since the dark ages it really is only recently that Bissell vacuums have really gained popularity in the everyday home and it’s good to see that they are now becoming a favorite with homeowners across the country.

In my quest to find the best carpet cleaner I somehow stumbled across the Bissell Big Green deep cleaning machine. I’m not sure why I haven’t seen or heard of this Bissell Big Green before but I’m glad I did. Out of all the carpet cleaners, I have tested over the years the Bissell Big Green deep cleaning machine bought life back to my carpets in ways I didn’t think was possible.

In fact, I might as far as to say my carpets look better than when they were first put down. I know I might sound like I’m overpraising this Bissell Big Green carpet cleaner, but believe me the proof is in the performance. Keep on reading for my full hands-on review of the Bissell Big Green deep cleaning machine.

Bissell Big Green Design And Features

If you have ever rented a deep cleaning vacuum to bring life back into your carpets, they tend to be rather cumbersome and heavy machines, not with the Bissell Big Green. The Big Green can be either rented (daily rental price is roughly $29.99) or purchased for under $400. I highly recommend you first rent the Big Green before you buy as it really is a great way to test it out. I have found that many of the major stores such as Lowes have the Bissell Big Green deep cleaning machine available for rent. This store locator also might come in handy to help you find your nearest retailer.

If you find yourself cleaning your carpets at home a lot the cost of renting a commercial deep cleaner can soon add up, and I think the cost of $400 to actually buy the Bissell is more than fair when you calculate how much you could potentially save when compared to regularly renting. However, if you only need to give your carpets a good deep clean every so often renting the Bissell Big Green Machine is probably the better option.

What I like the most is that Bissell has made the extra effort on the design to make it more pleasing to the eye (if you have ever seen or rented other carpet cleaner brands you will know what I mean) for home use, and whether you are renting the Big Green Machine or buying you expect it to look the part, right?

The anti-tip design ensures that the Bissell Big Green is always standing upright, so don’t worry about it falling over and accidentally smashing through your 42-inch flat screen. A great feature on the Big Green are the two extra-large tanks that stack on-top of each other on the front of the unit.

One tank holds the cleaning solution (which should be more than enough for cleaning an average size living room carpeted area) and the other tank holds the dirty water, muck, and grime that has been removed from your carpets.

To take the guesswork out of knowing when to empty the collection tank or when to refill the cleaning solution Bissell have added an indicator light that tells you when it’s time to take action on either of the tanks. When compared to those other heavy rental carpet cleaners the Bissell Big Green carpet cleaner only weighs around 50lbs, I was actually surprised at how easy it was to maneuver even when the tanks were full and I was even able to get it to the edges of the carpet without any trouble.

I have often found with heavy-duty carpet cleaners I have used in the past that cleaning the carpet on the stairs can be a challenge. So I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered the handy 6-inch stair attachment combined with a 6-foot hose on the Bissell Big Green.

That attachment along with the extra-long power cord cleaning my carpet on my stairs was super easy. The good thing about this attachment is that is can be used for much more than just deep cleaning your stair carpet I actually quickly ran it over my upholstered sofa set and it made the armrests look like they were new.

I’ll admit the Bissell Big Green carpet cleaner isn’t packed full of features but to be honest, why would it? It’s built for one thing only and that's to get your carpets clean and it does a fine job. What it does have are a set of powerful cleaning motors as well as an extra-large brush roll that really gets deep into your carpet. I actually tested the Bissell Big Green carpet cleaner on a range of different carpets and rugs from a Shag Pile to a Frisee style carpet, this Green Machine impressed me on everything I threw at it.

Apart from I have already talked about above the Bissell Big Green carpet cleaner is pretty easy to use even if you have never used this type of heavy duty carpet cleaner before. You basically just run the Big Green Machine back-and-forth over your carpet and the rotating dirt lifter brushes with do their thing (removing deep-down dirt).

I have not mentioned the cleaning solution that is needed for this unit. Bissell recommends that you use their Professional Deep Cleaning Formula which can be found here, I found that is isn’t too costly and a little does go a long way. Bissell also regularly run promotions on the price of the Big Green rental and formula, so it might be worth checking out to see what is currently on offer.

Even when your carpets look clean they aren’t (especially if you have pets) and quickly running the Bissell Big Green carpet cleaner over your rugs will produce a full bucket of dirty, grimy water.

My experience in the past is with big bulky commercial grade carpet cleaners but the Big Green was different than those I had previously used. I quickly noticed that the Bissell Big Green carpet cleaner dries faster, cleans a lot better and got deeper into the carpet than those other rented units I had used previously.

Maintenance And Support

If you rent the Big Green you are covered by their support for your rental period. However, if you decide to buy the Big Green it comes with a limited 5-year warranty (like most of the Bissell vacuum cleaners) which should give you a bit of peace of mind that you will have a solid reliable machine for many years to come.

Bissell can be reached at almost any time of the day via their customer support hotline and I have found that the customer service staff have been super helpful with my concerns in the past when I have called about problems with my Bissell vacuum cleaner/s so I’m guessing that the same level of customer service will be there for the Bissell Big Green carpet cleaner if I find myself facing any issues (touch-wood no issue have shown themselves as of yet).

In this Bissell Big Green review, I was hoping to give you a quick overview of my initial thoughts of the Bissell Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine, cover a few of its basic features, renting vs owning, and its typical carpet cleaning ability. I hope that I have done that, but if you have any other questions feel free to leave me a message below in the comments section.

The Good – if you are looking for a vacuum to deep clean your carpets I really cannot recommend the Bissell Big Green carpet cleaner enough. It may not be the lightest or smallest of vacuums and it may only have a limited feature set but for taking out once a month it is perfect for bringing new life back into your aging carpets. Having the option the to rent is also perfect for those that don't want to commit to buying or simply don't need to clean their carpets as much to warrant the purchase

The Bad – The Bissell Big Green can be costly at just under $400 (at the time of writing). However, that being said you can simply rent the Big Green if and when needed. The size of the Bissell could also be a deciding factor especially if you live in a small house or apartment with little or no storage space, but renting could be the better option if this sounds like you?

The Bottom Line – If you rent a carpet cleaner regularly (once or twice every couple of months) then it really is a no-brainer to invest in and buy the Bissell Big Green carpet cleaner outright. If you decide that renting is for you simply use this store locator to find your nearest rental retailer. If you have pets or children in your home this vacuum can be a lifesaver on the time you spend cleaning and your health.
